The greatest monument and the proud landmark of Namur is the Citadel. The place echoes with historical significance. Namur is famous for food which has a mixture of German quantity and French quality. People in Belgium follow a strict etiquette when it comes to food and drinks. So much is the public love for flamiche that there is a flamiche festival which is held every September in Dinant, a town near Namur. The flamiche is complimented well with the drink amber ale. People in Namur also love their beer and there are some who like to have beer along with the flamiche instead of the amber ale.

The prominent beer names are Sara (bittersweet in taste) and Joseph (fruity to taste). Among meat, venison, Ardennes sausage, smoked ham, veal, pork and the famous Ardennes paté is favored. The health conscious folks of Wallonia and Namur are quite particular about their salads. In fact, the salade liégeoise, rich with warm bacon pieces and green beans, is predominantly indulged in throughout the region. The dessert consists of tarts topped with rhubarb or sugar.

Oostende Vacation

The city is protected from the North Sea by a series of large dikes built in the late 14th century. However, the city often fell victim to invading armies. Its importance as a harbour rose in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a railway link to Brussels was built in 1838. In 1846 it became a transit harbour to England, sending its first ferry boat to Dover. Hundreds of passengers travel between Oostende and England in a space of just two hours, which makes it a good weekend resort for British travelers.

Named The Queen of the Belgian sea side Resorts, Oostende boasts a long and sandy beach and is a popular beach resort for locals as well as visitors to Belgium, many of whom come to surf and sail. The old town and fishing harbour are popular attractions, and Oostende has much to offer in the way of shopping, eating and entertainment.

Places of interest
The twin towered church of St Peter & Saint Paul, close to the railway station, is a neo-gothic building built of sandstone in 1904-5. It houses the mausoleum of Queen Louise Marie, Belgium’s first Queen, who died in 1850 in Oostende. The "Fort Napoleon", north of the city centre, is the only Napoleonic fortress still intact in the whole of Europe. Built by Napoleon during the French occupation in 1810 and completed in 1812, it housed 260 soldiers.

In the Second World War it was used as a German barracks. Between Oostende and Middelkerke, near the beach, lies a large group of dunes known as the "Raversijde Domain", which is a natural nature reserve. Here also is the "Atlantikwall", a complex of tunnels and bunkers built by occupying German troops in the First and Second World Wars. Nearby is also an archaeological site of a medieval fishing village from 13th to 15th centuries.

For garden lovers, the Japanese Garden in the Koningspark is worth a visit and can be found opposite the swimming baths, near the sea wall. A walk along the splendidly clean and unspoilt beach, with a swim or paddle in the sea, is one of Oostende’s pleasantest activities, but there are plenty of further activities in the centre and close to Oostende. Oostende has several shopping centres, including the traffic free Kappellestraat, Adolf Buylstraat and Witte Nonnestraat.

Also, at the Alfons Pieterslaan and the Torhoutsesteenweg you can shop all year round. Market day in Oostende is on Thursdays on the Wapenplein, Groentemarkt and Mijnplein. For those interested in history and culture, Oostende has several museums and galleries to visit. The Museum of Local History holds collections from the Neolithic and Roman times, a maritime section and sections on the two world wars.

The Museum of Fine Arts holds works from the Belgian Masters, and at the Museum of Modern Art you can see a wide range of paintings, sculptures and objects from Belgium’s recent history. Other places are the Museum Sint Pieterstoren, the Museum of Religious Arts, the North Sea Aquarium and the Schooner Mercator which is a former Merchant Navy training ship now restored as a nautical museum. James Ensor House is where the famous impressionist painter lived.

One of the most popular places for families with children is the Maria Hendrika Park. Here you will find minigolf, rowing and pedal boats, playgrounds and woodland walks. Refreshments are available at the café. You can also take a horse drawn carriage tour around the city, where you will be shown the interesting sights of the city.

Food & Drink
Whatever kind of food or restaurant you are looking for you are likely to find it here. Oostende has plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars and taverns both within its lively city centre, and along the promenade. When I think of Austria, the first thing that comes to my mind is the Austrian Alps. Maybe just about everyone knows that Austria is one of the best places to go during the winter. There is a lovely Caribbean Villa on St Lucia which you might well want to consider for a St Lucia vacation instead of an hotel this year. It is called Villa Giorgia, and it has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and has some lovely West Indian architecture, making it a very attractive place to stay. It sits in well over an acre of parkland like grounds on the Cap Estate, and what you will get here is privacy and luxury, a two swimming pools.

By the way one pool is large and the other is a splash pool, and what a sight they are at night when the lights were on at night. There is a lot more to this lovely Caribbean Villa than privacy and luxury, because the whole shape of the house is unusual, and there doesn't seem to be much of it at first sight, when in fact it is totally deceptively enormous. The colors are a cooling white and grey, and it is so well laid out inside it appears completely uncluttered.

The outside paving is terracotta, and one of the main features is the absolutely enormous verandah, absolutely ideal for chilling out with a glass of rum punch and a good book. Intersperse this with dipping in and out of the pools, and enjoying the grounds. All of this makes Villa Giorgia the perfect spot for the more than perfect St Lucia Holiday.

A description that springs to mind because of the comfort is that it is a real home from home What is included is breakfast and lunch every day apart from Sunday, for which you buy in the groceries and food. Francesca the housekeeper who also cooks divinely is there Monday through Saturday 8.30 am until 1.30pm. Shopping for supplies in the supermarkets at Rodney Bay is quick and easy.

Francesca has everything you want in a housekeeper, for whom nothing is too much trouble, and her smile is constant and is a joy to see. Whatever you do, get her to make a rum punch, they are just out of this world. You'll find everything you need here for a perfect St Lucia Holiday, and Villa Giorgia really is a Caribbean Villa you won't want to leave even to explore the beautiful island that is St Lucia.

Having said that, do rent a car, because the villa is in the ideal position if that is what you want to do. The Lisu Hill Tribe Village

The village was very clean, with only about 10 homes or so. What surprised us was their beautiful, well kept garden and also that the village was surrounded by trees. Most hill tribes do clear cut, slash and burn farming. The elephant camp owns the land and helps them with funds and money for building projects. The villagers moved here from high in the mountains, because it was close to schools for their children and a much better way of life.

The village headman, Asapa, and his son, who spoke English, greeted us, and we were taken to his home to meet their family. We took our shoes off and entered his home. We were given a cup of green tea, which we sipped, and started asking questions. The houses were built like those of the Karen or Lahu hill tribes, up on stilts, instead of with dirt floor on the ground like most Lisu homes. Asapa told me that although they stick to Lisu customs and culture, the homes more reflected a combination of hill tribe and Thai houses, which were more comfortable and sturdy.

In the village, we also learned about their farming methods, how the children got to school, who lived in which house and how many there were in the families. While the dinner was being prepared, twenty or so Lisu men, women and children formed two circles in front of us. The boys and men formed an inside circle while the women and girls were on the outside circle. They had all showered and changed from their colourful work clothes into their even more colourful evening costumes.

The men usually wear T-shirts and Lisu baggy pants and the girls wear traditional dresses which are easy to work in during the day. The children had changed from their school uniforms into their traditional costumes.

Asapa came out of his home in his black Lisu clothes and hat carrying a long musical instrument made of five bamboo pipes fastened to a gourd at the bottom end. Five holes were drilled in the gourd, where he put his fingers. He walked into the centre of the circle and began playing. It kind of sounded like a flute but also had a bass note that added a beat.

As he was playing and marching in the centre, the girls and boys joined hands and began dancing around the outside in their respective circles. It didn't take long before we all joined in. We then went back into the house and sat on the floor. Dinner was mountain rice a lemongrass soup; a Lisu pork dish mixed with vegetables, which was not spicy; a very spicy chicken red curry and fresh stir fried vegetables. It was more than we could eat. Lisu people like to eat black pig, which is much sweeter than the store bought commercial white pigs.

In true Lisu tradition, they are being kept in pens far away from the house and streams. It was getting dark and a little chilly, so we put on our jackets and sat around a campfire that was made for us. In the house, the beds were being made up for us on the living room floor. Everyone took turns going to the bathroom and taking showers. Weepha even heated water for us to bathe with. The mattresses were comfortable, sleeping two persons on each mattress. We were given clean blankets and pillows.

It reminded everyone to put on their ear plugs, or at least keep them handy, as at 3am, the roosters would start crowing. Soon, we all fell asleep while listening to the village sounds, people talking softly, children laughing, pigs snorting at times and chickens flapping their wings as they go into the trees to roost.

A visit to the Hill Tribe Museum is a good starting point; to learn about the hill tribe peoples, customs and traditions. To get there, drive on Highway 107 toward Mae Rim and look for a sign indicating a left turn into Ratchamangkala Park. After turning, a few minutes' drive brings you to the museum; a pavilion near a large lake. The daily lives of the various hill tribe peoples are illustrated through exhibits of photographs, agricultural implements, household utensils, artefacts associated with the various traditional religions, musical instruments and ethnic costumes.

Some exhibits include models dressed in complete traditional costumes depicting daily activities, such as a Hmong family having a meal or a Lisu man serenading his sweetheart. The museum is open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm. A slide and video show is available from 10am to 2pm daily, except Sunday.

The Elephants Camps
From here, go back to Highway 107 and continued north past Mae Rim past the turn off to Mae Hong Son in Mae Malai (Highway 1095) and through Mae Taeng. Once you pass Mae Taeng, go up the hill and a few kilometres more to a big sign on your left that says Mae Taaman.

Turn left here and travel about 7km to a quiet elephant camp. You can't miss it. Just before the village you will see elephants on your left. Turn onto the parking lot.

The Adventure
Here the quick adventure begins, although you will need to make reservations in advance through your guide or tour operator.

To reach the Lisu hill tribe village (the adventurous way) means taking a one hour elephant ride through streams and over mountains, then change on to an ox cart for a 20 minutes ride to your bamboo raft for a 50 minutes float along the river.

You will then transfer to a four wheel vehicle for the short ride to a Lisu hill tribe village, where you will spend the evening with a Lisu hill tribe family and guide to experience their way of life. Toilet and showers are available here, but there is no electricity. Try and imagine you're not really going around in circles.

The Elephant Ride
When the elephants arrived, we walked up the steps to a boarding platform, where we got into the seat that holds two persons on the back of the elephant. We took off and right away headed for the stream. When we came to the bank, the elephant had to go down and the front bar kept us from sliding off. It was a little scary at first, but after you do this a few times, you learn where to hold on and it was kind of fun.

Once we settled down from the excitement of being so high off the ground and started into the jungle, we heard shouting from our friends on the elephant in font of us, When we get around the bend, we could see that their elephant was urinating. We are talking gallons here. When an elephant urinates, its whole body shakes something like being in the massage chairs at the airport.

Not only that, but an elephant eats constantly while walking in the jungle. This means it passes gas a lot and everyone got a real kick out of this. We continued on swaying gently on the elephant's back with the sound of birds and of the elephants constantly passing gas. We traveled through stands of bamboo, and it seemed that the elephants never stopped eating, pulling the top tender bamboo branches with their trunks and eating them.

The Aljama Mosque

The Aljama Mosque, at its time the second largest mosque in the world. Taking over 200 years to complete, the Mosque's construction started in 784AD. With the capture of Cordoba by Fernando III in 1236AD the mosque was converted to a cathedral and almost all the outer doors were sealed.

During Moorish times, the many open doors of the mosque let in light which made the structure brighter, and, one would imagine, a more welcoming place than it is today.

When the mosque was converted into a cathedral, a third of the pillars were removed for a courtyard. In the center of what is left of the mosque, the arches were reworked and the ceiling raised, this space is now the heart of the cathedral. Inside the Mezquita are row after row of arches and pillars. Marble was required for the mosque's construction.

Many of the pillars in the Mezquita were pilfered from earlier Roman buildings. If the pillar was too long, it was sunk into the ground and reshaped to fit in with the other columns. It is almost impossible to portray this masterpiece of architecture appropriately in photographs. The repeating arches and soaring ceiling are balanced by exquisite detail decorations. On approaching the Mezquita, one's first thoughts are of approaching a massive fortress. All around the exterior there are massive doors, highly decorative but closed and uninviting.

This hill town lies nestled in the calf of the boot that is Italy, in a region known as Le Marche. Divided into four provinces Pesaro-Urbino to the north, Ancona, Macerata and Ascoli Piceno to the south the Marche extends from the Adriatic coast in the east to the Sibillini Mountain chain of the Appenines in the west. From north to south, the region is characterized by gently rolling hills and fertile valleys that run east to west from the sea to the mountains.

Along these verdant valleys, four lane highways connect the seaboard and the A14, the major north south highway, to the interior, making it possible to swim in the sea in the morning and relax in the shade of an alpine forest in the afternoon.

The 9,694 square kilometers of the Marche are populated with 2,120,000 people, mostly employed in the service and artisan industry. The name Le Marche was bestowed sometime around the 10th century from a German word meaning a border town.

And the authentic Italy here seems to linger on the periphery of foreign binoculars. The tourists who have traversed Tuscany have not yet “marched” en masse into these very Italian hamlets, whose origins reach back into millenia.

Although there have been artifacts found on Mount Conero dating 100,000 years ago, it wasn't until the ninth century BC that a permanent settling of the Marche took place. The "Picenus," a people of controversial origin, settled in the southern part of the region having followed a sacred bird, a woodpecker (in Latin "picus" thus the name "Picenus"). The 50 necropolis founded by the Picenus clearly indicate that these people were divided into tribes, each independently ruled and having its own language.

The Picenus were unable to form a political administration and continued to live in separate city states. Overpowered by the Galls and the Athenians in 395 BC, the only remaining memory of these people is in the city of Ascoli Picenus (renamed Ascoli Piceno after Italy's Unification). And the residue of the region’s ancient peoples remains in the atmosphere and in the cheeses of Le Marche’s best known city, Urbino.

In the 15th century, Duke Federico of Montefeltro, a swashbuckling mercenary, refurbished Urbino into an early model of the ideal Renaissance town. His palace was a study in early Renaissance palazzi. The Duke cultivated art, architecture, and philosophy so that today’s visitor will encounter a freeze frame of Medieval intrigue and style.

Traveling to Dresden in December is one of the coldest days of the year. As one steps off the train, the change in temperature can be palpable but Dresden is well worth visiting even in the bitter cold. The city is best known for its Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market), which is a month long festival at which many craftspeople from all over Germany sell their wares. Christmas markets are common throughout Germany, but the one in Dresden is the oldest and the largest. Traditional German Christmas delicacies like Stollen (fruitcake) are eaten and a gigantic fairy tale playground is erected, complete with automated fairy tale characters who recite lines from their stories.

The market has occurred annually for over 700 years and improves each year. A good way to experience the full effect of the market is to bring a friend and some shopping bags, and just let your senses guide you until you sense it’s time to stop for some Glühwein (mulled wine).

The market is a great way for visitors to get a taste for “traditional” German handicrafts and foods, both literally and figuratively. The market is also huge, so there is literally something for everyone. Another sight to really enjoy was the Zwinger. The Zwinger is an architectural marvel, a palace from the 18th century it’s like a bustle with a multitude of visitors speaking various languages.

This created an odd, yet pleasant disparity between the distinct architecture and the 21st century sights and sounds of people chattering on their cell phones in at least seven different languages. Visitors to Dresden are now very lucky in that the Frauenkirche (loosely translated as the Church of Our Lady) has recently been restored and re-opened to the public, after its near total destruction in the Second World War. This site is complete with a museum detailing the restoration process, complete with miniatures.

The museum is small, but it is in both English and German, so there’s no excuse not to visit! Even people who are not interested in architecture will find the restoration story compelling and moving, as the pictures of Dresden in ruins are quite moving. Every Dresdener was either directly affected or has a family member who was affected by the bombings.

One exciting site to see is the gigantic statue of the golden knight, or Geldene Ritter. The statue itself is very regal and gigantic, but you can get very close to it and admire the worksmanship, which is a real treat for art for those in love.

There has been a noticed increase in the time taken for property speculators to 'flip' their condominium units. Why? Perhaps because, following an increase in construction costs and off plan sales prices, speculators are having to sell at a price to end users that may be prohibitively expensive, especially following several recent increases in interest rates and the associated increase in mortgage costs.

When it comes down to it, some people don't feel completely comfortable in buying into a condominium that is still under construction. Perhaps they were stung during the 1997 economic collapse.

Perhaps they are concerned that the same thing might happen again. There is of course a level of risk involved. Property speculators take on this risk, and over recent years many may have profited well from doing so.

However, given that there have been a number of new units entering the market over the last year, the supply of speculator driven 'resale units' in new condominium has increased, which means that the end user will commonly have a choice of a number of units in any one condominium, increasing the competition between speculators, and the end user is in a stronger position to negotiate the price down.

As such, for many property speculators, investments returns are not only taking longer to come to fruition, but the profit margin is also on the wane.

How are these speculators going to continue to make good profits? Where will they look next?

Well, recently a speculator acquired a bare shell penthouse unit in an older condominium with the sole intention of renovating the unit and reselling at a profit.

The speculator employed a reputable interior renovation company to refurbish the unit in it's entirely. As the unit was bare shell, it needed much more than just a fresh lick of paint.

But, the purchaser was daring enough to take this challenge on, and after 3 months of renovation works, the unit was marketed and sold within 6 weeks at a profit of 30% of the total amount spent on the unit, including the renovation work. In fact, many individuals or companies make a good profit from looking around for a good deal, and then gutting the unit and making it look really nice often not necessarily using the highest grade materials, but looking really nice.

The difference in achievable prices between units 'A', with the old Formica scratched fitted wooden furniture and smelly carpet, and unit 'A' with the new modern furniture and bright shiny tile flooring and concealed lighting, could be as much as 40%.

However, having been project manager for a number of fit outs of condominium units in Bangkok, we know that it's not as easy as ABC. There are of course a whole number of hurdles, pitfalls and two steps forward followed by one step back. You need a good team of interior decorators and most importantly a good supervisor or foreman at the helm.

Even if you do manage to get the above, you would still be well advised to ensure that the work is regularly supervised, to make sure that the workmen are not mixing too much sand with concrete to save costs etc. The other problem that is often experienced is when a 2 month fit out job ends up taking 6 months.

Perhaps the best way to overcome this problem is by making sure that you get qualified references of the contractor before giving them the job, and be very 'hands on' during the refurbishment period to ensure that the project remains on time and within budget.

If you're going to be in Paris, the Sacre Coeur (also called Sacre Cur) is a definite must see attraction. This Basilica, also known as the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, is located at the Montmartre butte which is the highest point in the city.

Some say that Banderas Bay was formed from a volcano; that it is so deep that no instruments have ever been able to accurately detect its depth. Others claim it to be two miles deep. They are all incorrect as it’s merely an extension of a canyon running from the Banderas Valley or Ameca Valley with its deepest point near Cabo Corrientes, measured at 900 meters or approximately 3,000 feets.

Many of the local residents and many of the previously written articles about the Puerto Vallarta area will tell you that Banderas Bay is the largest bay in Mexico and the second largest bay in North America, only behind the Hudson Bay.

Obviously they haven’t seen the Chesapeake Bay. Again, a slight stretch of the truth in that it’s only the third largest bay in Mexico. At approximately 500 square miles in area, one could say that Banderas Bay is a bit smaller than the 6,000 square mile Campeche Bay and the same holds true for Chetumal Bay, the large body of water located south of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Most locals indicate that Banderas Bay is not only the largest bay in Mexico, but it’s also the third largest bay in the world. Wow, now that’s a real stretch, when you have bays the size of Bengal Bay with its area of 1,300,000 square miles. We hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but, Banderas Bay might not even rank in the list of the world’s largest bays; nevertheless, it’s large and it’s deep.Okay, now that we have the facts out of the way, let’s find out what makes Banderas Bay so special.

Unlike Florida, where the elevation might be 50 feet above sea level in the center of the state, the elevation changes in the Banderas Bay area are dramatic. For example, if you head toward the south end of the bay near Cabo Corrientes, you’ll find extreme elevation changes.

At certain points, you can go inland by a half a mile and find yourself 2,000 feet up in the Sierra Madres looking down at the bay as though you were viewing it from an airplane. At that same point, if you go offshore by a half mile, you’ll find yourself in 3,000 foot deep blue water. In other words, there is a 5,000 foot elevation change in a one mile distance. This creates a 45 degree canyon wall bifurcated by crystal blue water.

On one hand you have the lush tropical mountainside fauna and flora, on the other hand you have the beautiful blue bay water; it just doesn’t get any more spectacular than that. The horseshoe shaped Banderas Bay has over 50 miles of beautiful shoreline, ranging from jagged cliffs to sandy beaches, with the city of Puerto Vallarta essentially in the center.

The beaches account for approximately 60% of the shoreline thereby providing 30 miles of magnificent beaches lying on the perimeter of the bay. Regardless of where the beach is located, you will have a panoramic view including the Pacific Ocean, the entire city of Puerto Vallarta, and the Sierra Madres as a backdrop.

Next, with 50 miles of shoreline, we ask, how much of this Wonderland is available to us? The highway running along the bay shoreline extends all the way from Punta Mita at the northernmost point, through Vallarta, and south to Boca de Tomatlan, which is a few miles south of Mismaloya.

Leaving Boca de Tomatlan, the highway heads inland and therefore provides no automobile access to the southernmost 15 miles of shoreline. Furthermore, all of the shoreline south of the Mismaloya area is still classified as ejido land and is therefore not available to foreigners for purchase.

Consequently, at this time, you can forget about owning any part of the southern 15 miles of coastline. That still leaves us about 35 miles of Paradise, with 10 miles of shoreline located south of Vallarta and 25 miles of shoreline north of Vallarta. Aside from a handful of beautiful little secluded beaches south of Mismaloya, accessible only by boat, virtually all of the 30 miles of Banderas Bay beaches lie within this 35 mile strip which is available for purchasing by foreigners; and purchasing, they are.

Now, what differentiates this bay from the many large shallow water bays of the world is its quantity of humpback whales, giant manta rays, dolphins, marlin, sailfish, and a myriad of other fine game fish that live in deep water. Not only does the bay average over 1,000 feet deep, but the water temperature, being on the same latitude as Hawaii, is ideal year round for these fish. Of course, if it’s good enough for the fish, it’s good enough for us. Swimming conditions in the bay are perfect, year round, with sunshine overhead for at least 330 days annually.

Finally, why the name, Banderas Bay? Bandera is Spanish for flag, therefore, it is the bay of flags. When the Spaniards first arrived in the area around 1525, it was occupied by various settlements of warlike Indians that carried spears and shields flying cotton flags of different colors, while defending their territories.

At that time, the Spaniards began referring to the area as the bay of flags or Banderas Bay. By 1530, the conquest was complete and for almost 500 years, there have been no serious conflicts between the Spaniards and Indians.

To the contrary, they have intermarried for over 20 generations, to the extent where today, approximately 80% to 90% of all native Mexicans are mestizos, a combination of Spanish and Indian. When the climate is absolutely perfect for at least seven months per year, it’s only logical that they made love and not war.

To this day, the natives are still a very kind, gentle, and hospitable group of people and war, crime, or any other kind of confrontation is avoided at all costs. They are a very religious and peaceful society living the motto of “mi casa es su casa” or my house is your house. Foreigners, regardless of whether they are tourists or immigrating retirees, are always welcome by the natives of this very special Banderas Bay region.

Sierra Madre Mexico

Do you remember the 1927 novel, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", which was about a couple of down and out Americans that joined up with a crusty old timer to prospect for gold in Mexico? It was later adapted into a film by John Huston in 1948, who returned to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 1964 to film "Night of the Iguana".

The Sierra Madres have been and continue to be rich in mineral wealth containing vast deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, and tin. The problem is; the majority of us North Americans can't do very much to prosper from or enjoy the benefits associated with these rich mineral assets. However, the Sierra Madres do possess another great asset that we can benefit from and enjoy that is real estate.

Now, we ask, where exactly are the Sierra Madres? Well, there are actually three mountain ranges in Mexico, all referred to as the Sierra Madres. The first is the Sierra Madre Oriental range that runs about 700 miles from north to the south on the eastern side of Mexico. On the western side of Mexico, the Sierra Madre Occidental range runs about 700 miles from the US border south to an area just north of Puerto Vallarta.

The Sierra Madre Del Sur begins close to where the Occidental range ends and continues south to Guatemala. The two western ranges are bisected by the Trans Volcanic Axis which is a geologically active volcanic mountain range whose smoldering cones link the western ranges with the eastern range. This east to west volcanic range starts near Cabo Corrientes, at the southern tip of Puerto Vallarta´s Banderas Bay, and ends just south of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico.

Now that we have the geography lesson behind us, let's just position ourselves where three of these four ranges intersect in Puerto Vallarta. Standing in Vallarta, we look to the north and see the Sierra Madre Occidental range, to the south we see the Sierra Madre Del Sur range, and to the east we see the Trans Volcanic Axis range.

Yes, even though Puerto Vallarta is located on the Mexican Riviera along the Pacific Ocean coastline, you could say that it's in the center of the Sierra Madres. Being located in the center of the Sierra Madres and on the Pacific Ocean, Vallarta offers some of the most scenic land anywhere on the planet.

Being located at the same latitude as Hawaii, the climate in Vallarta is essentially the same as Hawaii. With the fabulous climate, outrageous views of mountains and ocean, located only two to three hours from the US, and a progressive PAN Party in power, real estate treasures in Vallarta have been discovered.

The coastline from Riviera Nayarit, 45 miles north of Vallarta all the way south to Careyes on the Costa Alegre, 55 miles south of Vallarta, is currently undergoing a major transformation. Due to the recent legal changes pertaining to the foreign ownership of coastal land in Mexico, the stable peso, the conservative and pro-US Mexican government, and of course, the onslaught of baby boomers searching for retirement destinations, this entire 100 mile stretch of the Mexican Riviera is exploding with population growth and new development.

One of the results of Mexico's 1917 Revolution was the Agrarian Law which provided the redistribution of land from the wealthy land owners to the farming peasants. This Agrarian Law prohibited the farmers from ever selling their land; they were only to work it. However, in 1973, the Mexican government modified the Agrarian Law, thus allowing foreign real estate investment in Mexico.

Certain restricted zones were also made available to foreign buyers by establishing the fideicomiso, or bank trust. This 50 year bank trust grants the real estate title to a bank, acting as a trustee, who is obligated to follow all instructions given by the trust's beneficiary, the foreign buyer.

The Agrarian Law was again amended in 1993, allowing the ejido farmers, with unanimous consent, to privatize or regularize their land and sell off parcels to others. In 1994, NAFTA created a dispute-settlement provision to protect direct foreign investments in Mexico. Since the PAN Party took control in 2000, there have been a number of other legal changes, all designed to encourage foreign investments in Mexican real estate. They include financing, title insurance, bank trust regulations, and other tools to provide security to the foreign investor.

All Mexican land within 100 km of the borders and 50 km of the shorelines is considered as restricted zones and treated differently than the interior land. Since the beautiful western coastline property along the Mexican Riviera lies within the 50 km restricted zone, it is being slowly but surely acquired by foreigners through fideicomisos, as the ejido farmers privatize it.

Of course, as it converts, its value and selling price skyrockets, thereby providing substantial new wealth for those fortunate land owning families or ejidos. There is so much magnificent coastline available, this process of conversion will probably continue for another generation.

As this coastline gets privatized, sold to foreigners, and developed, the North American baby boomer invasion continues and the local economy thrives as thousands of new construction and service jobs are created. The head of the local Chamber of Commerce has predicted the population of greater Vallarta to reach 600,000 inhabitants by 2015, making it much larger than many northern US cities such as Cleveland, Ohio.

The current construction boom seems relentless as new villas, condominium complexes, shopping centers, and office buildings continue to spring up daily.

While boating in Banderas Bay, you peer across the water and see countless beautiful villas and condominiums nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madres and you must agree, "There's gold in them that hills", the real treasure of the Sierra Madres is the hills themselves and the real estate contained therein.

Las Vegas lies in the middle of the desert. The arid expanse of sand is broken up by the mountain of glistening man made constructions that make up the city of Las Vegas. One thing you'll hear again and again is that even though Las Vegas gets very hot, the dry desert heat is not unbearable.

The hottest time of the year is the summer months of June, July and August, when the mercury regularly hits 104°F, however, the humidity averages a low 22%, and even on very hot days, there's apt to be a breeze. As a precaution visitors are advised to drink plenty of water in the summer months (ice cubes don't count) particularly if you will be doing a lot of outdoor activities.

Las Vegas is situated in a desert so the tendency is for daytime temperatures to be high with the evenings cooling down rapidly. There is little rainfall, with merely one or two days of rain a month. If you visit at this time, expect to spend all of your time indoors, sheltering from the heat in air conditioned entertainment complexes.

However, there are some outdoor malls where you don’t have to worry about the sun because they have large canopies, a few with spraying machines to keep the visitors cool even in the middle of a hot summer day. But this is the desert, and it's not hot all year round. The winter months are much cooler, with the temperature hovering at 59°F and at night dropping to 30°F (-1°C) and sometimes lower.

Although rare, it does snow occasionally in Las Vegas. (The winter of 1998 between 1999 dropped nearly 2 inches of snow on the Strip. The breeze can also become a cold, biting, strong wind of up to 40 mph and more. And so there are entire portions of the year when you won't be using that hotel pool at all (even if you want to because most of the hotels close huge chunks of those fabulous pool areas for "the season").

For the most part, winter visitors will be able to enjoy outdoor attractions, with little threat of storms or rain. The best time to visit Las Vegas is in the spring or fall, when temperatures are surprisingly mild. The desert climate insures a minimum of rainfall, and daytime temperatures are predictably pleasant, often in the high 60s and low 70s (Fahrenheit).

In any case, it’s always the right time to go to Las Vegas because climate control is a science in this desert town and you will rarely be uncomfortable while inside.

Though March through June and the month of October are the suitable months for touring Las Vegas, summer and winter are preferred by those who want to avoid the maddening crowd. What To Bring What to bring is largely dependent on the time of year of the visit. During winter, when temperatures get chilly, be sure to pack a warm jacket. (It's safe to leave the heavy parka at home.)

Visitors in spring can probably get away with little more than a sweater and khakis, but it doesn't hurt to pack either a sweatshirt or a light windbreaker.

A summer stay requires plenty of shorts and T-shirts and lots of sunscreen and a hat even if it's not all that hot, you can burn very easily and very fast. Also, be sure to pack some practical footwear as most of the hotels on the Strip are spaced fairly far apart.

So how do you decide where and what properties are likely to give you the best return? Lanzarotte´s climate is such that year round rentals can be achieved as winter temperatures average around 20 or 22 Celsius daytime average maximum, making it the warmest part of Europe in the winter. But this has an affect on property prices, making them quite high in comparison to resort areas in some other countries.

However, the large number of new properties being built on the island, especially in Playa Blanca, is helping to stabilize prices. So firstly of course, you have to decide on your budget. As in any resort area, the further away from the coast you buy, the more you will get for your money.

However, the further away from the coast the property is, the harder it is to rent it out. Lanzarotte has the advantage of being quite a small island so no matter where you are, you are never more than 20 till 25 minutes drive to the coast.

Realistically though, to achieve a high number of weeks rental, you need to buy in one of the 3 main resorts Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Your budget will determine whether you can afford an apartment or a villa. Which ever one it is, a swimming pool is essential in the case of a villa, a private one which is heated.

So, your main criteria are ideally to be as centrally located as possible close to cafes, restaurants, bars and supermarkets so that holiday makers don’t have to hire a car if they don’t want to, to be close to the beach, and to have a pool.

If your budget is quite high though, there is a big market for those people who hire a car and want to stay in a quiet peaceful area a bit away from the resort centre. When you go to look at a property, take a few photographs of the outside and inside and have a look at them before you decide on a purchase. The photographs are what sell the property. If the property doesn’t take a good photograph, it is unlikely to do well for rental.

To determine what rental income you are likely to achieve, have a look at similar properties in the area on rental listing sites and see what they are charging. If these sites have availability charts, this can give you some guide as to their success in attracting rentals.

Buy a villa in the right location, present it and market it correctly, and you can realistically achieve 30 to 40 weeks occupancy in your first year. Along with the capital appreciation, not a bad investment.

Monaco’s annual yacht show attracted over ninety of the world’s finest yachts and five hundred of the world’s best yachting companies. The show has grown in popularity over the fifteen years since it began, and this year attracted over twenty thousand visitors to the Principality.

The luxury yachting market has tripled in the last eight years, and helped along by orders from Russia’s ‘nouveau riche’, the industry has seen an increase in orders of over a quarter in the last year alone. But while luxury and Monaco are often associated, poor sales and a possible drop in property prices haven’t been seen in the principal real estate sector for over a decade.

Monaco Real Estate
In contrast to the highly successful Yacht Show, property sales in Monaco have been unusually slow in 2005. Although only a square mile in size there are over a hundred estate agencies battling for buyers to choose their services, and at times it seems that every third or fourth retail unit has been commandeered by a property company in Monte Carlo, the best known and most sought after area of Monaco.

According to Monte Carlo property specialist Henri Boulanger some estate agents are being squeezed, and viewed the yacht show as the last opportunity to turn a dismal year into a good one. ‘The yacht show attracts a wealthy clientele in considerable numbers, and the type of person who might be buying a luxury yacht might well be thinking about buying a property in Monaco as well.

While it wouldn’t have been etiquette to actively pursue buyers, many estate agents in Monaco were desperately hoping to see their doors open and for one or two potential buyers to call into their offices. With good two bedroom apartments starting at over a million Euros, and penthouses with Mediterranean views often over five million and some of them over ten million, it can take just one sale to turn a bad year into a good one.’

Monaco’s property price inflation has often risen by over ten per cent a year in the last decade, but a combination of events have conspired this year with a possible stagnation in prices for 2005, and potentially even a fall. The passing earlier this year of the popular Prince Rainier, Europe’s longest reigning monarch, cast a cloud over the area which it is just emerging from, but economic factors have also played a significant role in the downturn of the real estate market.

‘The strength of the Euro against the American dollar has led many of our potential buyers from the US to delay their viewing visit from this year to next, and earlier this year another source of important buyers from the UK held back until after the election to see what the outcome would be’, explains Henri, adding ‘and now with the uncertainty of the economy after the recent US hurricanes it is quite possible that some US buyers will delay their visit even more, or possibly to cancel buying in Monaco altogether’.

Monaco Grand Prix No surprise then that while the tourists were in Monaco in increased numbers than last year, the prospect of several dozen potential property buyers descending upon Monaco and staying in her best hotels over a few days was seen as an opportunity not to be missed by the realtors. But what is surprising perhaps is that the Yacht Show is viewed as a better opportunity than the Monaco Grand Prix for her realtors.

‘The Grand Prix attracts tens of thousands of people to Monaco every May’, explains Henri, ‘And every April we get a lot of new enquiries for property in Monaco, with the buyers asking to view apartments in Monte Carlo with views of the race circuit during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. But what they don’t realize is that many of the apartments for sale have been rented out for the weekend, and viewing is impossible.

Even if an apartment hasn’t been rented out for corporate hospitality it would take all day to get from one apartment to another. The Grand Prix is a great tourist event for Monaco, and some of the estate agents go away for a few days. They weren’t doing that during the Yacht Show.’

Epson P-3000 Photo Viewer And Media Player

Epson is probably not the first name that springs to mind when deciding which PMP to buy, and its P-3000 a numerically and technically updated version of the company's well received P-2000 provides a slightly askew interpretation of what's traditionally expected from a portable media player.

Instead, the P-3000 is more a portable multimedia storage viewer, but PMSV doesn't have quite the same ring to it as PMP.

The smaller of two devices the bigger sibling, the P-5000, offers an 80GB hard drive compared to the P-3000's 40GB, the P-3000 has received a total makeover from its predecessor, with a slicker and sexier design, better control system and much improved display, more of which later. We plumped for the less capacious of the two simply because of the lower, more accessible price point: £350, compared to £500 for the P-5000.

The first thing newcomers to the Epson range will note is the P-3000's size and weight. This is no Archos 605 reviewed here in terms of svelte, pocketable brilliance. If you're carrying the Epson in your bag or (very large) pocket, you're going to know about it. Measuring 15 x 8.9 x 3.3cm, give or take, it weighs in at a hefty 426g.

Once the back pain has eased, however, and you take the time to examine it up close, you realise that the P-3000 has been endowed with a comprehensive and logical design. The 4in LCD dominates the front, but wherever there's an inch of space available you'll find control keys, connections or card slots aplenty.

Build quality is absolutely rock solid too, and the curvaceous new shape makes it extremely easy to grip and hold securely, with the raised and tactile buttons responsive and easy to use. For use 'in the field' or on the move, it's perfect.

One of the areas Epson has really concentrated on is the P-3000's screen sorry, "Photo Fine Ultra LCD Viewer". It's certainly good enough for professional field use and supports most image files, including Raw, Adobe's DNG and JPEG files.

Creative ZEN

In a move that surprised many a Creative fan, the company has ushered in a flash based replacement for its Zen Vision : M, a full size, hard drive player that offered up to 60GB of space. Though the news was not well received by some proponents of carting around a large library of tracks, those who give the new player dubbed simply the Zen a chance will find that it's a completely worthy follow up to its chunky predecessor.

This new Zen which comes in 4GB ($129.99), 8GB ($199.99), and 16GB ($249.99) flavors may not hold as much media as the Vision : M, but it offers the same, lovely screen in a much smaller body, and it packs in a couple of new features for good measure.

It's all about sleek understatement Creative has gained somewhat of a reputation for putting MP3 players in a vast array of colors, so it comes as a bit of a shock (and maybe a letdown, for some) that the Zen will be offered in just one : black. Still, it must be said that black does make an excellent frame for the awesome 2.5 inch TFT screen, which is capable of displaying 16.7 million colors.

Also, while the design might not be as innovative as that of the iPod Touch and iRiver Clix or as cute or as eye catching as that of previous family members the Zen has a certain understated elegance with its shiny face and brushed metal backside. It's like a smaller, sleeker version of the Vision.

Despite its ample screen, the Zen is pleasantly compact. At just 3.3 inches by 2.1 inches by 0.4 inch, it's about 60 percent smaller than the Vision : M and it's definitely pocket friendly. We're also pleased to note that Creative didn't skimp on the controls and has migrated completely to the user friendly tactile variety. Main functions are handled by a four ways control square surrounding a center select button. This is flanked on the top by a back contextual menu rocker and on the bottom by a shortcut and play or pause toggle.

Sadly, there's no dedicated volume control, but the right edge of the Zen houses the ever handy hold power switch along with a standard mini-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The reset and mic holes can be found on the bottom and top spines, respectively.

Fun features for all Exploring the top side of the Zen also reveals one of the new extras we alluded to earlier. In another departure from the norm, Creative has built in an SD card expansion slot a first for its MP3 players. We're happy to report that the slot can take SDHC cards, which currently go up to 16GB in the full size SD variety.

(Of course, at a price that exceeds the 16GB Zen itself, those are a bit cost prohibitive at the moment.) Considering the move away from more capacious hard drive memory, we definitely think the addition of memory expansion was a wise and necessary move.

Another new feature to be found on this Zen is its support of unprotected AAC files, meaning it will play back iTunesPlus tracks, though you can't use iTunes to transfer them. The player can sync via drag and drop in Windows Explorer, or you can use a jukebox such as Windows Media Player or Rhapsody.

Like its other family members, this Zen also supports MP3, WAV, Audible, and both protected and unprotected WMA tracks. Unfortunately, it also shares Mac incompatibility with the other players in its line. Photos must be in JPEG format, which Windows Media Player can convert to automatically during syncing. On the video side, the Zen plays WMV and Motion JPEG out of the box and MPEG4, DiVX, and XViD with conversion. Creative includes an application Zen Media Explorer which can take care of the conversion painlessly and (somewhat) quickly.

In addition to its media capabilities, the Zen includes Creative's usual impressive array of features, though it's worth noting that there is no line in recording for audio or video (the latter in particular would have been a nice touch). You do get voice recording and an FM radio with auto scan and 32 preset slots.

There's also basic PIM functionality : you can sync contacts, tasks, and calendar info from Outlook to the device. Plus, you get the usual shuffle and repeat playback modes, handy contextual menus, and the ability to search for artists and songs as well as rate songs on the fly and set up to 10 bookmarks. Nine preset EQs, a five-band, user definable mode, and a bass boost function ensure that you can adjust sound to your liking.

But it's the fun visual display option that set the Zen line apart. Album art can be viewed as a thumbnail or in full screen mode on the playback display, and Creative includes various themes for interface customization.

You can also set any image on the player as wallpaper, and the photo browsing experience is great : there's a 5x4 thumbnail grid and each one magnifies as you scroll over it. Naturally, you can view photos and slide shows while listening to music. There's even a nifty, semi split screen deal on the main menu that cycles through album art, photos, or video image clips, depending on which media type you are browsing.

Shining performance No two ways about it : the Zen's screen is fabulous. Photos look vibrant and bright, with excellent color saturation and good detail. Videos are similarly impressive clear and bright with no noticeable pixilation (though we did notice the occasional blurring around some sharp edges) and the viewing angle from side to side is excellent. Even the interface looks stellar, right down to the transparent icons on the main menu. It's a nice screen to look at for sure.

Frankly, we've come to expect stellar audio quality from Creative's MP3 players, and the Zen did not disappoint once we swapped in the Shure SE530 headphones. (For their part, the included headphones were passable.) Perhaps the best thing is that all genres of music sound equally great. The bass of Zeb's disco house track "Disco Patel" was tight and enveloping without overshadowing the sparkle of the high hat and minute ting of the triangle.

In the Bangles' high end heavy intro to "Hazy Shade of Winter," the detail of each instrument was crystal clear, and the relatively quiet Spanish guitar was not lost among the frantic chorus of the rest of the track. Overall, music was rich, warm, and detailed and it just made us happy.

The Creative Zen also boasts plenty of volume to drive a full size set of 'phones we only had it up to about a third with some noise isolating buds. The rated battery life of 25 hours for audio and 5 hours for video is good, if not all that awe inspiring. But with a screen, sound, and features like the Zen, we'll easily sacrifice a super long battery life.

History of Villamartin Spain

Villamartin is situated near to Torrevieja in the Costa Blanca region of Spain. The area has a rich history which can be traced right back to prehistoric times. It has also has been a strategic location linking Cadiz, Seville and Malaga. Archaeologists have found Palaeolithic deposits around the Guadalete river. The big megalithic necropolis known as the Dolmenic area of Alberite is found in the plains of Villamartin.

As such this makes historians believe that the origin of the town is from around the 5th millennium B.C. The Romans built several roads across Villamartin and over the years numerous artifacts have been discovered. Visigoth remains have also been found. More recent finds have been from Arabic and Christian people. From the 8th century A.D. the entire region fell under Muslim control.

The Matrera fields formed part of the Cora territory of Ronda. The closeness of Arcos, which belonged to the Cora de Medina, drove Omar Ben Hafsun, at the end of the 9th Century, to build the fortress of Matrera, to defend Iptuci, the most advanced city in the Cora of Ronda. In 1248, Fernando III reconquered Seville and the Guadalete area.

His son, Alfonso X, began a campaign in 1253 assisted by the Military Order of Calatrava, removing all the local Muslim chiefs. On June 10th of 1256, Alfonso X pledged the castle and its ground to Orden. Matrera fields returned to Muslim domain, and remained until Alfonso XI, reconquered it in 1341. On April 1st 1342, King Alfonso conceded Matrera and its grounds to the Cabildo court of Seville filling the town up again. But the strong instability of the “banda morisca” made this attempt to form population fail for second time.

In 1408, the King of Granada, from Zahara, failed in his attempt to conquer Matrera again. In 1421, Juan Ortega, a Sevillian jury undertook to populate the town again and Fernán Pereza´s son, Guillen de las Casas financed the building of the new settlement, including a tower.

In 1445 the Duke of Arcos stopped a new siege by the Granadian King Mohamed Aben Ozmin. Again, in 1452 there were battles in the Encinar de Mataparda, that the Duke of Arcos won, and in 1482 the battle of “Lomo del Judío” took place.

In 1486 a lawsuit between Ines Peraza and the Concejo council of Seville, caused the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) to take control. In a letter from “El tumbo de los Reyes Catolicos del Consejo de Sevilla” it was revealed that Ines Peraza owned the district of Villamartin under condition of building a fortress in it.

Seville had invaded the district and expelled Ines and her family. On May 20 th 1486 the Reyes Catolicos ordered to give the place back to Ines Peraza. The end of the lawsuit is unknown, but in 1503, that tower, the Matrera Castle and its area belonged to Seville. In 1485, Matrera field was no longer a border, and was repopulated. After the defeat of Granada, three military powers took over these virgin territories : Seville took the Matrera Castle, the Peraza family took the tower of Villamartin and the marquis of Cadiz took Hortales Castle.

The foundation of Villamartin dates from February 4th 1503, when the Cabildo (court) of Seville decided to populate the Matrera fields area, conceding them to 118 settlers, who came from surrounding towns.

Later, these settlers were expelled from the area and they filed for the fulfilling of the Carta Puebla. This lawsuit went on for three centuries being finally resolved on 9th February 1818. This law process is known as “El Pleito de Matrera”, and it is the longest in the whole History of Spain.

Other stand out features of the Casio EX-V7 include a 7.2 mega pixel sensor, mechanical CCD shift technology and Anti Shake DSP, and 33 Best Shot Modes. Ease of Use
Casio isn't the first brand that comes to mind when you think of photography perhaps largely because most of its advertising has been directed at the lifestyle market but it was in fact one of the first to release and dictate the trend for credit card sized compacts.

Its latest fashion accessory, the EX-V7 snapshot camera, recalls recently PhotographyBLOG reviewed models from Sony (the T100) and HP's R837 also. Although here the faceplate that acts as a means of powering up and down the camera slides across to reveal the lens and a flash bulb immediately above.

A mix of metal and plastic, the metallic silver EX-V7 feels reassuringly weighty in the palm with the chewing gum stick sized NP50 lithium ion battery inserted. The camera justifies its 'Exilim' tag with a width of just 20.8mm at its narrowest point, making it the world's slimmest to boast a 7x optical zoom (38-266mm equivalent), which itself remains stacked within the body whether in use or not.

You also get an attractive shiny black plastic docking station onto which the camera sits upright, attached via an unprotected port at its base, yet angled slightly forward so the 2.5-inch, 230,400 pixels resolution LCD is the focus of your attention.

This dust attracting 'station' sits atop your desk and acts as both a means of recharging said battery and downloading snaps to your PC/Mac, with AC adapter plug, USB lead and AV-out cable supplied in the box. Though you can't tell from its minimal exterior the EX-V7 also boasts the must have of image stabilization, here of the more reliable mechanical CCD-shift variety.

Starting at the front then, and below the sliding faceplate featuring the Exilim branding we find a AF illuminator window, next to which are two tiny parallel slits for a stereo microphone. The camera itself powers up in a second or so, the LCD bursting into life nigh on simultaneously.

A top the camera there's similarly nothing to confuse just a nicely springy, lozenge shaped shutter release button. Press this fully and an image is captured before you can fully blink, while there's a pause of a second at most between shots.

The right hand side of the camera if viewed from the back features a means of attaching a wrist strap, below which is a slide open compartment that contains both battery and a slot for optional Secure Digital card. By contrast the left hand side is free from any features at all.

And so to the back of the EX-V7, which is dominated by a 2.5 inch LCD screen, which is reasonably clear but suffers slightly from image ghosting in lower light. Top right of the screen is a vertically arranged zoom slider with just enough purchase to prevent slippage. It falls readily under the thumb while your forefinger hovers over the shutter button.

Operation of the zoom itself is silent and smooth, free from any mechanical jitter, while moving from maximum wide angle to extreme telephoto takes roughly three seconds. Just below the lever is a playback button, and below that the self explanatory menu button. Press this in capture mode and you're given three sub folders to choose from record, quality or set up.

The record menu gives a choice of auto focus, macro, infinity focus or manual focus settings, continuous shooting, self timer and various anti shake settings. Select any of these and a brief description of their image-taking properties appears at the base of the screen (the 'Icon Help' function, which can be deactivated if it starts to irritate).

'Auto' anti shake claims to minimize the effect of both hand wobble and movement of your subject, then you have the choice of Camera Shake only, Image Blur which claims to increase light sensitivity, and even a demo mode. You also get the chance to select your AF area from spot, through multi area and a tracking AF option, turn the AF assist light on or off and similarly activate or deactivate the digital zoom. More interestingly, further options include turning 'quick shutter' or 'audio snap' features on and off, and calling up a nine zone compositional grid on screen.

The quality folder that's next in line is more self explanatory, with selectable resolution from seven mega pixels down to 640x480 pixels for email friendly JPEG snaps. Next there's a choice of three compression levels. Fine, Normal or Economy, plus the ability to adjust exposure compensation from +/-2EV, manually tweak white balance and ISO (ranging from ISO64 up to ISO800), then metering, dynamic range, apply a noise filter (here called a 'Portrait Refiner'), or the usual color filter effects.

Image sharpness and saturation can also be adjusted in camera, as can the intensity of the flash quite a comprehensive list of options then for what is first and foremost a point and shoot camera.

The third menu folder is the aforementioned set up. This allows adjustment of screen brightness, sound settings most usefully turning off the annoying beep that soundtracks every one of your selections and actions plus year or date, language and generally less essential features, apart from the ability to format the card or memory in use in one fell swoop. A useful 'reset' function returns all settings to the factory default if you've activated a number of functions that you come to realize that you shouldn't have.

Moving away from the LCD now, and top right of the camera back you have a dime sized shooting mode wheel illustrated with letters and icons that will be self evident for anyone who has ever used a digital compact, or Casio, before. These include a red square designating the full auto or snapshot mode. Continuing clockwise around the dial, you next come to the hand holding Best Shot feature, which here consists of 33 pro-optimized shooting or scene modes.

Press the 'set' button encircled by the four ways controller below the mode dial and a series of thumbnails appears detailing in pictorial form what each of them is for. As well as settings for usual suspects including portraits and fireworks, you also get backlight and high sensitivity settings, as well as twilight and retro (sepia) modes.

Next around the dial are separate aperture and shutter speed modes, followed by manual exposure mode, an easy mode (denoted by what looks like a shamrock, and simplifying the on screen options to just image resolution, flash and self timer) a second Best Shot mode for movie clips (including an intriguing silent movie option) and lastly the movie mode proper, with the ability to shoot wide screen ratio clips if desired.

All of these options are selected via the four way control dial that sits below the mode wheel. Press the top edge of the dial, marked 'disp' for display and a live histogram appears on screen. Press it a second time and the screen is wiped clean of all information for clutter free shot composition. As a default, resolution and image quality, shooting mode and anti shake symbols are displayed on screen, while, when you half press the shutter button, the camera's choice of ISO, aperture and shutter speed pops up momentarily on the LCD.

The LCD is really at the heart of all operation on this camera as there's no optical viewfinder to fall back on. Switch to playback mode and captured images and clips immediately pop up on screen. Tabbing through selected shots is instantaneous and at no point do you feel the EX-V7 is at all sluggish or tardy in its response.

Press 'menu' again in playback and you're offered two folders. The first, headed with the word 'Play', boasts the choice of a slide show, constructing a print layout of two or three separate images at once, plus several editing options, including increasing dynamic range, keystone correction, brightness and automatic color correction.

While these won't be much of an added enticement for any Photoshop owners, this is a more varied selection than you'd get from most snapshot compacts in this price bracket. Images can further be resized and trimmed. The second playback folder is set up, and features identical settings to those offered in the shooting modes.
